Missed opportunity. I'd have explained that it's unreasonable to expect payment after the fact, but if they had asked, I'd probably have hired them. Then I'd have negotiated a settlement and given them each a check. We'd have also talked about fees for pre-approved work or projects they could do for me in the spring. Cleaning out my garage. Mowing our half acre lawn. The possibilities are endless. Win-win.
