The author is justified. The stepmother needs therapy, but that's the stepmother's problem. The grandfather never stepped in to intervene when the stepmother was abusing the daughter, so she can't look to her dad for help in dealing with the stepmother. The daughter's husband, who's not memtioned, needs to step up and back his wife's position on this issue.
